On Sabbatical 2024-2025
Location:
The nearest airport is McAllen International Airport (MFE). Lodging and restaurants are conveniently located along US Hwy 83 in the McAllen/ Mission, TX area and in Edinburg, TX and from wherever you stay you are less than 30 minutes from our gate.
Typical Day:
Our guide will meet you at the gate and stay with you during your shoot. You will drive to the blind, unload equipment and park your vehicle nearby. Mornings are exceptional at the Raptor blind where Crested Caracara, Harris’ Hawks and the occasional vulture perform. The Greater Roadrunner has learned where the scraps are and visits often.
At the afternoon blinds you will enjoy colorful natives and migrants. “Lucky” the javelina might be munching corn nearby as a family of Plain Chachalacas wanders in for a drink.
There is water on the Refuge but no power. Bring a cooler with drinks and snacks if you like, but don’t worry if you forget. There’s a full service supermarket less than a mile from our gate.
Dress is long pants and closed shoes regardless of weather. Everything in South Texas sticks, scratches or bites. You can rest at the “palapa” and enjoy the visitors to the feeder and water hole nearby.
We've found that non-photographers enjoy the experience as much as the photographers. Consider bringing along a friend who can see the world without a lens. They will marvel at the action and help you spot incoming targets. And, it’s so much fun to share the experience.
